چکیده

Background: The treatment of benign parotid tumours has shifted from superficial or total parotidectomy to partial parotidectomy in the recent two decade. This study examined whether current surgical techniques improved functional outcomes after surgery for benign parotid tumours. Methods: twenty six patients were assigned randomly to superficial or total parotidectomy (13 patients) and partial parotidectomy (13) surgery. The latter consisted of modified facelift incision, greater auricular nerve preservation and coverage with parotid fascia. Surgical complications and parotid gland function were monitored during the hospital stay, and 1, 3, 6 ,12 and 24 months after surgery. The assessment was performed through: fin needle function, visual analogue scal and loss of function. Results: The overall complication rate significantly lower in the functional surgery group. In this group, more patients were satisfied with their scars and facial contours, the auricular nerve sensory recovery rate was high, and transient facial paralysis and Frey’s syndrome were infrequent (4 and 2% respectively). Stimulated salivary flow on the operated side decreased to 71·9 per cent after function-preserving surgery compared with 20·7 per cent after conventional operation. There was no tumour recurrence in either group during a mean follow-up of 24 months. Conclusion: Compared with conventional procedures, functionpreserving surgery for benign parotid tumours improved cosmetic, sensory and salivary functions, and reduced the duration of surgery and operative morbidity.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of an allogenic acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as an interpositional graft to prevent Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy. METHOD We studied a total of 168 patients with benign parotid gland tumours, including 89 patients with pleomorphic adenoma; 45 with Warthin tumour; 17 with basal cell adenoma; and 17 with miscellaneous tumours. The patients were divided into ...

Superficial parotidectomy versus partial superficial parotidectomy in treating benign parotid tumors

The aim of the present study was to compare the outcomes of superficial parotidectomy (SP) and partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) in treating benign parotid tumors. Individuals who had undergone SP or PSP between 2005 and 2008 were enrolled, the medical records were reviewed, and a questionnaire was created and mailed to the patients. For the statistical analysis, χ2 and non-parametric Man...

Metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma to parotid lymph nodes: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND Malignant parotid tumors are rare metastases originating from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features and outcome of patients with metastasis of NPC to parotid lymph nodes after surgical therapy. METHODS We enrolled 14 NPC patients who had metastatic disease to parotid lymph nodes after IMRT. They received surgical treatment ...

Partial Superficial Parotidectomy via Retroauricular Hairline Incision

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of retroauricular hair line incision (RAHI) in partial superficial parotidectomy by comparison with modified Blair incision or facelift incision. METHODS Medical records of 73 patients with benign parotid tumor who underwent partial superficial parotidectomy were retrospectively reviewed. Size and location of tumors, operativ...

Parotidectomy for benign parotid tumors: an aesthetic approach.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) partial thickness muscle flap is among the various methods described to correct parotidectomy defects, but its indications and limitations are not clearly demonstrated in several reports. This study was done to test the aesthetic outcome of this method, its indications and limitations. The technique was combined with a face lift incision to further ...
